Breastfeeding Common Problems and Solutions

Breast milk is the best food a newborn baby can get. Breastfeeding provides the growing baby all the nutrients its developing brain and body requires. Here is a review of the most common problems encountered while breastfeeding and some trails of solutions. In any case, any breastfeeding mother who is experiencing difficulties should consult her physician or lactation specialist.

In case of a baby who has trouble for the first feedings, being patient and offering the breast often is often all that is needful. Asking for the help of a qualified lactation specialist to put the baby to the breast can provide very useful.

If a nursing baby seams to get disinterested from breastfeeding after a couple of weeks or months, being again patient and often offering the breast may be all that is required. Older babies snap through periods where their entourage interests them more. Another simple solution is to go in a a quiet place providing less stimuli and nurse there quietly.

In the case of a baby who falls asleep right after starting to nurse it is recommended to stimulate him and talk to him to keep his attention alert. A lot of babies get very comfortable while breastfeeding and tend to “drift away”. If a woman does not want to feedings to drag – on for too long periods of time, she can stimulate her baby by language or gently rubbing its back. It is also a good conformation to make sure the baby is not too bundled – up when breastfeeding as warmth may make him sleepier.

In case a breastfeeding mother suspects she does not have enough milk, she can check for signs that this might be the case.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of baby. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

A nursing mother should not be worried if her baby sleeps well between feedings, wets 5 or more diapers per day and seams alert and happy. Breastfeeding mothers tend to be concerned of not having enough breast milk while their baby is convinced of the opposite. Another good sign that the breastfeeding mother has sufficient milk for her baby is if he is gaining weight properly.

In the converse case of a breastfeeding mother who has too much milk and is “leaking” between feedings, a pleasing solution is to extract the extra milk and freeze it for the days when she will be away from the baby. Extracting milk should only be done after a feeding when there is milk remaining and the baby is fully satisfied.

When a breastfeeding mother suffers from sensitive nipples, she should consult her physician and get the proper help. The nursing mother should also be re – assured that most sensible breasts will get better over time.

Breastfeeding mothers can often suffer from breast engorgement. The simplest solution sis to breastfeed often or to reference the excess milk if baby is satisfied. Again, breast engorgement settles on its own after a couple of days.

Serious infections in breastfeeding mothers such as breast abces or mastitis require the care of a qualified physician or lactation specialist. Often such alarm signs as intense breast pain and fever are even now.

Breastfeeding – How to Handle Criticism

Attachment parenting is a new way of parenting, for example my parents who were teenagers in the 1970’s have never heard of this concept. Parenting has a way of changing with each generation. One thing that has not changed however is the so called taboo of breastfeeding. Women of past generations were taught that formula is the only breast milk. Others were working moms who felt that breastfeeding was not an available option to them. Unfortunately during those times the electric breast pump was not made available to them therefore formula was the easier route to take when feeding their baby. Even after all of our vast information and resources found on the internet, many people are still unsupportive in breastfeeding.

Since the 1970’s, breastfeeding has come a long way, but unfortunately the old way of thinking still exists. Today however, many women are more educated on the subject of breastfeeding through books, supportive organizations, message boards, the internet and from family and friends. However, breastfeeding criticism still exists among today’s present society. One of the best way to deal with this kind of criticism is to find out why they feel the way they do, perhaps this was taught during upbringing or the person just has personal issues with it, or maybe they think the idea of breastfeeding your baby is too primitive?

I trust that what you’ve read so far has been informative. The following section should go a long way toward clearing up any uncertainty that may remain.

Even in today’s modern society these feelings can still eventuate. Perhaps this person has never seen a women breastfeed their baby before and it makes them uncomfortable? Unfortunately, this happens among a lot of people. Often taking the time to find out the persons issues with breastfeeding will help them see that breastfeeding is a natural way of a mother bonding with her baby.

One way of dealing with criticism is to stay positive. From experience, it is hard to argue with someone who is positive and enthusiastic about breastfeeding. Smile a lot, even though this may be hard to do. Staying positive when speaking about breastfeeding is one way to spread the word. Educating others on breastfeeding is another way you can help society and refresh memory often times many women may be on the defensive end because they have failed at breastfeeding. While it may be difficult and sometimes that smile may be through gritted teeth, staying positive, educated on the subject and smiling a lot while on topic, maybe a way you can spread the word that breastfeeding can both be a positive and rewarding experience for both you and your baby.
